ICS - Incident Command System

Search and Rescue operations within the county are the responsibility of the Sheriff. Most operations are initiated by a call to 911 about a missing person or persons, and a Sheriff's Deputy will be dispatched to respond to the call. Often, due to limited resources, or the need for specialized talent, MendoSAR is called upon to help.

MendoSAR members participating in a Search and Rescue operation work with other SAR members and deputies to get the job done, and are concidered SO employees during the search. Therefore all MendoSAR members available for call out must be familiar with SO operating procedures, and radio operations.

Sometimes SAR operations are involved in other incidents such as natural or national disasters, and/or include other agencies beyond the Sheriff's Office. All participants must work together as a team, and this is where ICS comes in. The ICS was developed to assist different agencies working together on an operation to use a common language in refering to things, and to establish a chain of command.

On-line courses are provided by FEMA to explain the Incident Command System, and provide exams for certification. All MendoSAR members are encouraged to follow the links below to gain their ICS certifications. When you complete a course, and pass the final exam, you will be emailed or mailed the given certificate. Be sure to pass your original certificate along to the SAR Commander for credit and safe keeping.

OES - California Govenor's Office of Emergency Services

All mutual aid callouts require that the SAR members involved be trained and certified in various OES Protocols.
